The purpose of the Madera Police Crime Prevention Unit is to educate the community on how to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place. It is also designed so that the community can interact with the police department in a positive way. Getting involved with the community and knowing your neighbors is an effective way to help prevent crime. By getting involved with the community you know what is happening and know where and what crimes are occurring. Knowing your neighbors helps awareness of suspicious activity in your neighborhood. As well, in case of a natural disaster, it is helpful to know which of your neighbors may need assistance i.e., elderly, physically handicapped, non-English speaking, etc.

The Crime Prevention Unit has a variety of programs in which to teach people of all ages. All the programs are a FREE service to you.

Neighborhood Watch Program:

One of the most powerful and successful tools we have. This is a program where neighbors look out for each other and report any suspicious activity. It is a program designed to create awareness in your neighborhood and it enables the police and community to work together to fight crime. Neighborhood Watch Meeting topics can be on anything, from earthquake preparedness to child safety. Remember YOU are the eyes and ears of the police department! Business Watch Program:

This is essentially the same program as our Neighborhood Watch Program, except that it is directed to businesses. Businesses look out for each other and report any suspicious activity. Home (Business) Security Inspections:

An officer will walk through your home or business and make suggestions on how to better secure your home or business.

Vacation watch program:

This is a new program for the crime prevention department.  Residents of Madera are able to pick up a form from the Police department and list information as to when they leave and when they return from their vacation.  Madera PD volunteers and Officer Lloren will visit the home at various hours to help insure against possible crimes to the home.

Robbery Presentations:

Design for the business community, this program teaches the preventative methods and tips on what to do and what not to do, during a robbery. Bike registry program:

This is another new program that is being started by the Madera Police Department crime prevention.  Officer Wayson Juarez and Officer Durbin Lloren with the help from the Explorers and the Volunteers, are going to each elementary and junior High School and are registering students bikes into the local Law enforcement computer. If a bike is either stolen or lost and is recovered, the bikes owner can be located if the bike is registered through the program.  If you are interested in registering your bike contact the Crime Prevention office at 559-673-9362.

Madera County Tobacco Control Coalition:

  The Crime Prevention belongs to the coalition, and its purpose is to educate Madera’s youth and adults to the dangers of Tobacco use.  Through education and programs, it’s the intent of this program to get you help to fight against the addictions of Tobacco.  If you are interested in this program you can e mail Andrea at andrea.saldate@madera-county.com

Local activities:

Madera’s Crime prevention attends many activities throughout Madera. To list a few, Crime Prevention attends job fairs that are held by our local schools. We assist in the local Farmers market. Walk safe programs put on at Martin Luther King middle school.  Many of the ribbon cuttings of new businesses opening in Madera.  Annual events such as the parades, Jesse Owens Games, Fourth of July events, K-9 demonstrations (these is a very popular one with our elementary schools), in addition to many more.  If you have an event that you would like us to attend, contact Ofc. Aside from our Crime Prevention Programs we also encourage the citizens of Madera to take a tour of our facility, go on a ride-along with one of our outstanding officers, or volunteer at the police station.
