| | "Born from the Timber Industry", the historical origins of the Madera community were literally rooted from wood. Madera means "wood or timber" in Spanish and it is from this backdrop that officials from the California Lumber Company had the town laid out in 1876 at the end of a flume that brought lumber 63 miles from the mountains to the railroad. Officially incorporated in 1907, the city of Madera has developed into a community with premier services, amenities, and opportunities. Formed as a Council and Manager form of government, the Mayor and City Council address the legislative needs of the city with five City Council members representing residents elected at large and the Mayor selected by the City Council. The City Manager is appointed by the City Council to administer the overall city organization. As the largest full-service city in Madera County, Madera is recognized for it's outstanding community based service departments including; Police, Fire, Public Works and Parks and Community Services as well as customer friendly development and planning services, utility services and code enforcement activities.
