Robert Poythress is currently serving his third term in office. Members of the City Council serve four year terms. Robert was first elected to the City Council in 2004 and reelected in 2008 and 2012.   In 2012, Robert was elected as the first elected Mayor in the City of Madera through 2016.
In 2010, the method by which Council Members are elected to office changed from members elected at large to members elected by district with an elected mayor. The first election by district with an elected mayor was held in November of 2012. Prior to this change, the Mayor’s position was rotated annually amongst the Council Members serving. During that time, Robert served as Mayor in 2006 and 2011. 
Council Members also serve as Board Members of the Successor Agency to the Former Madera Redevelopment Agency and Commissioners of the Housing Authority of the City of Madera. 
Robert is a native Maderan. He graduated from Madera High School in 1974. After high school, he attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California and in 1978 graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Agricultural Business Management; and in 1998 he earned his graduate degree from Pacific Coast Banking School, University of Washington.
Robert has been in the banking industry since 1979. He is currently Vice President and Manager of Citizen’s Business Bank in Madera, California where he has been since 2005. He is also a partner in Teco Hardware and Poythress Farms.   
Robert is married to Carol Poythress. They have three children, son Richard and daughters Rachel and Laura.
In addition to their regular duties as members of the City Council, Council Members are appointed to serve on other boards as representatives of the City Council. They are also active in community organizations.
