Tips for Preventing Polution Tips for Preventing Polution
English (United States)

In Madera all storm drains flow to rivers and creeks, detention and retention basins but never to the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Never dispose of any waste down the storm drain.

Urban runoff pollution is caused by chemical and other materials that are poured or washed down storm drains. The water passing through storm drains is NOT cleansed by the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Storm water never treated for pollutants.

Types of Pollutants

Motor oil, pesticides, automotive fluids, chemicals and other litter find their way into our storm drains every day. One quart of used motor oil can contaminate 250,000 gallons of water. Animals living in our local sloughs, creeks, rivers, lakes and bay get their water from our storm drain system. Polluted water could cause these animals to become sick.

Paint with care...
Use latex paint rather than oil base.  Unwanted oil-based paint, varnishes, and used thinner must be taken to a household hazardous waste collection event.  Save and reuse thinner whenever possible.  Empty and dry paint cans can be disposed of in the garbage.  Never wash paints or equipment into the street or in your yard; rinse your paint brushes in the sink.
